What is Integrative and Functional Nutrition?
Nutrition is a key factor in good health, and Integrative and Functional Nutrition (IFN) takes an in-depth approach to figuring out the root cause of your symptoms. IFN is a systems biology and evidenced-based approach that takes a closer look at the whole person (mind, body, spirit) to understand the underlying cause of disease. People are made up of interconnected complex systems with environmental factors that also have a large influence on the person. The systems studied include digestive, nervous, immune, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and genetic factors, and more.
Taking a closer look at the person as a whole means looking into a person’s lifestyle, stress levels, inflammation levels, current diet, medical history, environment, meaningful relationships and many other aspects. This allows a deeper understanding of the needs of the individual rather than following general recommended dietary guidelines. Every person has a unique make-up, different environment, differing ways of dealing with stress, etc. and therefore a more personal and individualized approach is necessary. Understanding the systems and the role that nutrients have on optimal function allows for a more targeted approach to nutrition therapy for each individual.
